Situated right on the quayside of one of the most picturesque harbours on the coast PIER 36 is a fine example of a well-managed family business. From the moment you arrive, the intimate atmosphere and warm welcome from courteous, well-trained staff is memorable. Denis and Margaret Waterworth, joined by sons Lewis and Jody, opened their quayside pub in 1999 and have gone from strength to strength. Commitment to excellence at Pier 36 has led to rave reviews and an unprecedented list of awards in the last few years.
The recipe for success at Pier 36 is fresh local produce prepared with a modern twist and exceptional service which takes care of visitors from all over Ireland and much further a field.
This success has not gone unnoticed; within six weeks of opening we earned the title of “Northern Irish Seafood Pub of the Year.” Since then, further awards have followed including a highly commended nomination for “Best Catering” in the BA Tourism Awards, the “Best Ulster Welcome” award at the Northern Ireland Tourism & Travel Awards (October 2000). A coveted “Pub Oscar” from the FRLT was added to this impressive list of accolades in 2002 and it didn’t stop there. In 2003 we secured a marketing award at the inaugural Ards Business Awards and also earned our first “Investors in People” award for commitment to the training and development of our workforce. Finally, in 2004 Pier 36 was named “Pub of the Year” at the Northern Ireland tourism awards. Since then Pier 36 has racked up an unpercedented hat trick of Pub of yhe year awards by regaining the trophy in 2006 & 2012.
At Pier 36 we believe strongly that awards mean more than a pat on the back, we see an award as a challenge and an honour to live up to. This attitude has paid dividends and led to several excellent reviews in local and national press, inclusion in an ever growing list of guide books and fantastic customer feed back both in our visitors book and on the web. We have also started to gain an unprecedented amount of national recognition. In may, the Guardian listed us as one of Britain ’s top six fish restaurants and we were also listed in the BBC olive magazine as one of the British isles top 30 gastro pubs, the only Irish entry.
Catering isn’t simply about what arrives on your plate, a high standard of service is absolutely essential to the enjoyment of any occasion.
At Pier 36 we continually push for excellence in this field. Our award winning service is both friendly and helpful whilst remaining efficient and knowledgeable of the local area. This is essential to our visitors from further a field as a visit to Pier 36 is often part of a day out in the surrounding area. We want our customers to see the best features of our fabulous surroundings and our staff are encouraged to inform customers of local places of interest. At present we are lucky to have some staff with European language skills and our foreign visitors find this to be a great help.
The interior of Pier 36 is bedecked with everything a modern bar restaurant goer could wish for. As well as making sure that the premises is always in pristine condition we are continually striving to improve our facilities in an innovative manner.
This year has seen a significant upgrading in facilities for disabled customers. Both ladies and gents toilets have been modified for optimal wheelchair usage, we also produce our menus in brail and keep a stock of reading glasses. Our understanding of disabilities led to a remarkable review in the Belfast Telegraph by Bob McCullough (Deaf Talkabout 22/10/04): “Pier 36 were exceptional they treated us with consideration and courtesy and served us in an unfussy matter of fact manner which contributed to our enjoyment” … “we are sure to go back”.
In order to deal with increasing demand our bar and restaurant underwent a major renovation and expansion in early 2005. A brand new beer garden was built in accordance with new smoking regulations whilst our new dining area eases pressure at busy times and will also cater for functions of up to 40 persons. A brand new kitchen has also been built to cope with the now increased turnover.
Pier 36 also provides tastefully decorated and spacious rooms, with sea views and superb breakfast making it an ideal place to lay your head. Perfect if you have family visiting or a special event such as an anniversary coming up. Why not dine with us, enjoy the entertainment and stay over to complete the perfect night?
Come and enjoy the craic at Pier 36. We look forward to meeting you.
